Feniton Football Club currently run 2 mens teams both playing in the Devon & Exeter Football League. The first team are back in the Premier Division following promotion from Division One in the 2011/12 season, and the second team play in Division 6. The 3rd team were withdrawn from the league before the start of the 2011/12 season despite a successful last campaign. Although some 70 plus players actually registered during the 2010/11 season it became increasingly difficult to field 3 teams on a Saturday once injuries, suspensions and worst of all, unavailability took their toll. Coupled with the fact Feniton Cricket Club are proposing to take over the third team pitch as part of their new ground, it made a logical choice to withdraw the 3rd team.
There is also a successful Ladies team who play in the Premier Division of the Devon Women’s League and a flourishing Youth Section which boasts teams ranging from under 7’s through to under 16’s.
A brief history......................
The football team at Feniton was formed over 85 years ago and have played in all the various local leagues and cup competitions over this period.
The original wooden changing rooms shared with cricket and the local playgroup until they were replaced with updated facilities in 1980 and the clubhouse followed eight years later. The original pitch was developed for housing in 2000 and the move to the existing area was made with the final pitch set up and new changing facilities in 2004. The complex has 3 full sized pitches, a floodlit training area and car park. The quality of the pitches playing surface and the excellent facilities are amongst the best in East Devon.
We also host the very popular Exeter City Football Club’s Centre of Excellence Youth 6-a -side tournament which is played over a weekend each June.
Feniton, which is essentially still a village club, has always played an active role in local football, providing many referees and league officers. The club has been helped financially over the years and is, of course, extremely grateful for that support. The new changing facilities have shown just what can be achieved by local effort. Special mention however must be made to the help and assistance that the builders Millwood Homes gave the project. The final result is very much due to their generosity and technical support throughout the scheme. Additionally, the local councils and the Football Foundation have also helped tremendously by providing grants and loans.
Where to find us......................
Feniton is a village in East Devon 4 miles west of Honiton, 3 miles north of Ottery St Mary and 12 miles east of Exeter. It has a population of approximately 2000 and has become a popular choice for dwellers having a railway station on the London Waterloo line and its close proximity to the A30 and M5 road networks.
Feniton is probably named from the Vine stream that runs through the village. The name appears as “Vineton” on 17th Century maps It covers an area of some 650 hectares and includes the original “Vineton” village; housing estates built around the nearby train station and previously called “Sidmouth Junction”; the hamlets of Curscombe, Higher Cheriton and Colesworthy, and traditional Devon farmsteads and agricultural landscape.
As well as the football club, the village has 2 cricket teams playing in The Devon Cricket League and also run Junior sides. The Sports and Social Club play host to the football and cricket teams as well as running their own skittles, darts, cribbage and euchre (I’d never heard of it either) teams.
In the old village you will find St Andrews church, the post office, village hall, hairdressers and the successful Feniton Bowls Club.
Amenities in the new part include a Spar shop, Pizza takeaway, hairdressers and Youth Centre as well as the acclaimed Feniton Primary school which has over 200 pupils.
The local hostelry is The Nog Inn, very much a local’s pub serving a good choice of real ale and handy if you miss your train or get stuck at the level crossing. The Nog run two skittle teams as well as pool and dart teams and is well known for raising money for local charities.
