RESULTS SATURDAY 21st JANUARY
EXMOUTH AMATEURS 2 FENITON 1 (Devon & Exeter League Division 1)
The eagerly awaited clash between the sides laying in first and second places turned out to be a disappointing affair, ruined as a spectacle by the strong wind. It was Exmouth who, on the strength of their first half display, deservedly took the honours thus consolidating their position at the top of the table. Without leading scorer Paul Dowling (19 goals from 16 starts) Rob Pfieffer ploughed a lonely furrow up front for Feniton but found it tough going against a well drilled home back line. Matt Kingdon was also absent and with his deputy Sam Geake injured, Andrew Rose was called into the side to keep goal. Ammies playing with the wind at their backs took the lead after 10 minutes when Rose conceded a needless corner kick from which the ball was allowed to bounce around in the Feniton six yard box before Dave Green back-heeled it into the net. The second goal was soon forthcoming when yet another half clearance fell in the path of Craig Higham and his speculative effort from outside the box evaded Rose in the centre of the goal. Exmouth, using the wind to their advantage continued to put pressure of the overworked Fenny defence and perhaps could, and should, have been out of sight by the break. Instead, it was the visitors who were given a lifeline when, on one of their rare forays into the box, Ben Allen was brought down and Alex Frankpitt converted the resulting penalty. HALF TIME 2-1. The second period saw Feniton playing with the wind and they would have been confident to have salvaged at least a point from the game. However, despite having plenty of attacking opportunities they disappointingly failed to create any clear scoring chances and indeed, never won a single corner kick. The two sides meet again on February 4th by which time Feniton will hope to have some of their injured brigade back and available for selection.
FENITON RESERVES 0 UPLOWMAN ATHLETIC RESERVES 2 (Devon & Exeter League Division 6)
To round off a bad day the reserves also turned in a disappointing performance when losing at home to Uplowman Athletic’s second string who started the day a point ahead of Fenny having played 2 games more. Due to first team call-ups and injuries meant the hosts went into the game with just 11 players and contrived to their own downfall with defensive lapses that saw them concede two first half goals.
